using essential oils topically

If you are just beginning to use essential oils it can be scary when applying oils topically.  As a dōTERRA Wellness Advocate I feel safe using dōTERRA Essential Oils topically.  Some people are turned off by the scent of the oils, but the best thing about essential oils is that if your body needs that oil your skin absorbs it to where there isn’t a scent.  That’s why I began to inform our SIMPLE readers about using essential oils aromatically first.  Aromatically is the safest way to use essential oils if you are just starting out–then you can move into using them topically.

Topical application is a very effective method for applying essential oils because they can easily penetrate the skin. Once absorbed, they stay in the applied area for a localized benefit.  The top ten oils help with a myriad of health issues and my favorite blend is Lavender, Peppermint and Fractionated Coconut Oil.  I use this blend for headaches, bug bites, skin rashes and so much more. When I use this blend I apply it to my neck, forehead and temples.  You can also apply blends to your chest, abdomen, arms, legs and bottom of your feet.  You can find these essential oils here.

Although essential oils are readily absorbed, there are many ways to increase absorption. Using a light massage will increase the blood flow to the area of application, in turn improving distribution throughout the body. Use of a carrier oil can also increase absorption, especially in skin that is dry or flaky as it helps moisturize the skin and slow evaporation of the oil.

To decrease the likelihood of developing a skin sensitivity, especially on young or sensitive skin, it is advisable to use a carrier oil (such as Fractionated Coconut Oil) to dilute more potent oils and when trying an oil for the first time. The recommend dilution ratio is typically one drop of essential oil to three drops of carrier oil.  Like when using Oregano it tends to be hot so it is best to dilute it when you apply it.  Make sure to check out some of my DIY’s to begin making your own recipes using essential oils DIY Lavender Makeup Remover and DIY Citrus Coffee Scrub.
