Sleeping Bear Press logoIt is that time of year when school is almost out for break and Summer Reading programs spring up around the country. The motivation of earning a prize helps keep many kids brushed up on their reading skills throughout their break, but it is also a great way to introduce new titles as well. My girls are extremely excited to sign up for and start our local summer reading program next week and I know some perfect books for us to begin with from Sleeping Bear Press!

This time around I’m sharing some animal themed books for the animal lovers in my house. True stories, photos, random facts, fictional stories – if it is about animals my little ones will sit entranced.

Teach Me to Love cover imageTeach Me To Love :: this adorable book of animal photos and coordinating themed rhymes was an instant hit with my youngest. While each page’s verse was perfectly themed for the accompanying photo, they were also very applicable for children (my monkeys enjoyed the baby monkey with the “Teach me to swing! Teach me to climb!” verse) Geared for ages 0-4 years this book by Denise Brennan-Nelson, makes the kids and momma both smile and giggle at this house.

Dozer's Run cover imageDozer’s Run :: if your kids enjoy true stories, dogs, or running, this is the book for them! Dozer was a 3-year-old Goldendoodle when he decided to join all the runners passing by his yard participating in the Maryland Half Marathon, a race benefitting the University of Maryland Greenebaum Cancer Center. When the race was over and Dozer had reunited with his family “Dozer’s run” had inspired thousands of pledges in support of the Greenebaum Cancer Center. For ages 6-8 this book was written by Debbie Levy and Rosana Panza (Dozer’s owner!) and illustrated by David Opie.

Frog and Friends Frog's Lucky Day cover imageFrog and Friends: Frog’s Lucky Day :: I have a new reader who was very excited to read about the latest adventures of Frog and his woodland friends. The first of the two new stories included in the 7th installation of this series has Frog and his friends searching for the treasure at the end of a rainbow. This is followed by a story of group cooperation and friendship as Frog looks for a new pond after an unwelcome visitor won’t leave his. Once again this book is written by Eve Bunting and illustrated by Josee Masse and is for ages 6-8.

Whatever the ages of the young readers in your house there is surely a Sleeping Bear Press book that would be the perfect fit for their  summer reading list. Even better, you can enjoy these fun reads right along with them!
