moodsterslogoA few weeks ago (here) I introduced you to The Moodsters. Child development and parenting expert, Denise Daniels, created The Moodsters to help children understand and regulate their own emotions. After working with children in many capacities, Daniels started The National Childhood Grief Institute. While working with children experiencing grief, she realized that many children couldn’t express their feelings so she made her own manipulatives to help children understand their own feelings. In the Moodster products, Daniels focused on the primary moods children experience: happy, sad, afraid, angry, and loving.

feelingsflashlightAfter trying out The Moodster Meter and reading to coordinating storybook, we were excited when The Feelings Flashlight was delivered. Right away I read the story, The Scary Sleepover, to my son. While he is still too young to have a sleepover, we have had quite a few instances lately when he comes into our room at night, either scared or just wanting to cuddle. I like how the book introduced those feelings and talked through them. I still think my almost 3-year-old son is a bit too young to fully understand his feelings and work them through on his own, but it was nice to at least have a little discussion about being scared and I’m hoping we can try out some strategies to overcome fears soon!

2015-09-30 07.44.55After reading the book, my son couldn’t stop playing with The Feelings Flashlight. The flashlight projects pictures of The Moodsters onto walls or ceilings and “talks” to kids about their feelings. My little guy has been taking his flashlight to bed with him and I will often hear The Moodsters talking for a bit after I put him to bed.  It’s quickly become a favorite of his.

The Moodsters products are now available at Target but I recommend checking out the website as well.  When I was poking around I found a great downloadable curriculum for talking to young kids about their emotions and using simple strategies to help them problem solve.  I love it when there are additional {free!} resources for parents!
