Sleeping Bear Press logoI just love sharing Sleeping Bear Press books with our readers and was excited when I noticed that three of the books I have on hand to share had a couple themes to them. It wasn’t very hard to figure out that all three books were about animals. Honestly, all we had to do was look at the cover art to figure that one out. But while reading the books my girls and I were pleasantly surprised to discover that all three were also about friendship.

Ferry Tail coverFerry Tail is the story of Walter the dog and his live on a ferry. Walter has many jobs on the ferry helping the Captain, the Engineer, the Cook, and the passengers. His life is perfect, except for one thing… the Captain’s Cat, Cupcake. One gloomy day nothing seems to go right for Walter so he decides to try out life on land. Before the day is through Walter misses his life on the ferry but he can’t find his way home and help comes to him in an unexpected package. Written by Katharine Kenah and illlustrated by Nicole Wong this 32 page book is perfect for their target audience of 5-8 year olds.

Bear and Bird coverBear and Bird starts with a grumpy bear rescuing a fledgling robin who has fallen out of the sky. Bear and Bird go on to become friends who are only separated when Bird must fly south for the winter and Bear goes into hibernation. Their unconventional friendship lasts for three years until on spring when Bird returns and is unable to find Bear who had gone into her den for her winter sleep but did not come back out. Saddened at the loss of his friend Bird finds comfort in the memories of their time together. Written by James Skofield and illustrated by Jennifer Thermes this 40 page book is for a slightly older audience of 6-8 year olds.

I Love You Just Enough coverI Love You Just Enough was an adorable story from the Hazel Ridge Farm Story series from husband and wife team Nick (Gjisbert) and Robbyn van Frankenhuyzen. This series is bases on their years of experience as licenses wildlife rehabilitators in Bath, Michigan. I Love You Just Enough was the story of young Heather and a wood duck chick she finds one day while pulling weeds. After asking her Dad if she can keep the chick who is separated from his family her father replies that she will have learn to not love him too much as he must one day return to the wild. This 40 page book is targeted for ages 6-10 years but the illustrations and story are so captivating that even my 4-year-old will sit quietly for this book.

We read so often to the kids and these books sound great. I really like the sounds of I love you just enough, I’d like to order that one to read to the kids.
