disney oz the great and powerful cover artThis DVD has been out for a few days now – have you had a chance to see it? Or did you have a chance to see this in theaters?  Disney’s Oz the Great and Powerful

When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot. Fame and fortune are his for the taking. That is until he meets three witches: Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity and even a bit of wizardry, Oscar transforms himself not only into a great wizard but into a better man as well.

I was totally pumped to get my hands on this DVD. I didn’t have the opportunity to check this movie out when it was in theaters, so I for sure wanted to see it at home. I knew right away that I would not be inviting my kids to watch this with me. I heard both ways, but I know that my little ones are very sensitive to anything slightly scary. On a side note, I do always research what other blogs and movie reviews say about movies before I watch them with my kids. It’s just what I do. This was no different.

So, let’s get on with it. Overall, I totally dug this movie! My husband and I watched it together one weekend night. Here is what I loved about it. I have always loved The Wizard of Oz. While watching this, it totally put the story together.  They really made you think! I love movies that do that.  Almost every single aspect of this movie could be traced back to the original, in some way, shape or form.  Even when you aren’t thinking about it, you think back and realize what they did.  Amazing.

The colors were absolutely magical. Some scenes were just so colorful, it was a party for my eyes, no joke. I do love color though 🙂

Now, the rough parts. It’s got some awfully scary parts in it. I would not let my child watch this for many years LOL! The witch’s monkeys are the scary parts. The witches are the scary parts…and one turns green. Just sayin’. I won’t put a spoiler in here…but remember in The Wizard of Oz, that mean witch is green, right? Well…it shows how. I’m telling ya, pretty cool (for adults!). 🙂 This movie is rated PG, I definitely think it should at least be a PG-13 for the parts that are a little more scary than the average child would be able to stand.
