What do you make and what made you start your own business?
I started WhitMIMade after taking a local pottery class and falling in love with working with clay as a medium. I wanted to find something that allowed me to work with clay from home. I have always loved big, unique earrings so I started experimenting with clay earrings which is entirely what I made today! Each pair is thoughtfully and individually designed, sculpted, baked, sanded, and packaged by me. My earrings are lightweight and affordable statement earrings that have a variety of shapes, sizes, textures, and patterns, not to mention made with a variety of techniques such as marbling, blending, and folding. Each pair is covered with a clear cast resin to give a shiny-finished look.
What does home life look like for you?
What do you do outside of “work hours”? Right now, home life is very different due to COVID! I have a full time job that I do remotely from my house right now. At night, I start working on WhitMIMade things such as packing orders, creating new styles, and posting on social media. Outside of work hours, I love to hangout with my dog, go ride quads down our local country roads, or hangout with friends on a patio for happy hour!
How long have you been in business?
I started just under a year ago! It is crazy to think how much has changed since I first started WhitMIMade.
What’s the one thing you’ve learned that you didn’t think you’d learn?
One thing I didn’t realize would be so important for my small business is that marketing on social media is huge! I have spent a lot of time diving into research, analytics, and getting to know my customers through social media.
What’s your favorite item you carry?
My favorite collection is definitely the Neeko collection I launched a few months ago! Each pair carried so much meaning with my dog being diagnosed with cancer and donating part of my proceeds to the Animal Cancer Foundation. This collection inspired me to continue giving back through various foundations with every launch I do.
With all the companies in the market today, why WhitMIMade? What makes you unique, in your eyes?
WhitMIMade is unique for a few reasons. First, all of my earrings are all Michigan inspired, they are nickel and lead free which allows them to work for anyone, and they have a clear cast resin on top which gives them the shine to make them stand out. Also, my earrings are anywhere from $12 – 16 which is super affordable compared to other makers in this business.
What’s the one thing you think ALL people can love from your shop?
I think anyone who likes earrings can find something unique from WhitMIMade. Whether it be a stud or a dangle, I have fun options for everyone!
