It’s winter. All three of my kids are in different schools.  There are germs everywhere. But we do what we can to stay healthy and have some great natural remedies on hand for when we do get those coughs and colds (and even that cracked winter skin).  Here are a few things we incorporate into our daily routines to help stay healthy, recover faster and stay comfortable.

Stay healthy with probiotics. A healthy gut can be one of the best ways to stay healthy. Eating foods with natural probiotics like yogurt, fermented foods and kombucha can be a huge immune boost. Supplementing with probiotics is also important.  Even very young children can benefit from probiotic supplements.  Find one without added dyes and sugars.  This one from Wellements is organic and the only ingredients are a probiotic blend and organic olive oil and is safe for newborns and older. Even my older kids will take this with no issue.

Recover more comfortably with natural remedies. I don’t like to turn to conventional medicines if I don’t think they are necessary. For an average cough or cold, I always use natural products to keep myself and my children comfortable while the virus runs its course. When my kids have coughs, I love to apply a chest and foot rub both during the day and at night.  This chest and foot rub is organic and safe for babies and children ages 3 months and older. Our whole family loves this petroleum-free option.  We also keep other Wellements options on hand for internal use when needed.

Stay more comfortable with skin balm. My whole family has dry skin in the winter but one of my sons really seems to suffer from dry, cracked skin and eczema patches.  To keep the itchy, rough skin at bay, we have been using this organic all-purpose baby balm. My son is 11, but I love that this balm is only made with organic oils and butters and is petroleum-free.  I will often put it on at night and, because it’s so thick, it stays put and works on those rough patches all night.
