a SIMPLE carpet deodorizer DIY

The warmer weather has been absolutely fabulous here lately, as it has allowed us to spend a lot of time outside. But I’m always amazed at how much “outside” comes back inside with us! I’m definitely finding myself sweeping and vacuuming a lot more lately.

One thing I like to do when vacuuming is sprinkle a little carpet deodorizer on the floor to help freshen things up. With sweaty, dirty kids running in and out and two dogs sprawling themselves across the living room floor on hot days, my carpet could use all the freshening up I can give it!

I’ve used store-bought deodorizing powders for years but always hated spending the money on something that just didn’t seem to really freshen things up. Then I researched how to go about making my own. You guy!!! It’s so easy!!!

As in “2 Ingredients” easy! And only takes about two minutes to whip up! And it really does freshen up our house! You know it’s good when your husband makes a comment about how good it smells in the house and asks if you just vacuumed….he doesn’t need to know that you actually vacuumed almost a week ago!

Here’s what you’ll need to make your own SIMPLE Carpet Deodorizer ::

2 cups Baking Soda

20 – 25 drops Essential Oils (total)

Shaker container

A quick note about the shaker container: empty parmesan cheese containers are great for this! Or you can make your own out of an old jar with some holes poked in the lid. I’m using some random container that came with this juicing/blending kit we used to have. All you need is a container with a lid that has some holes big enough to distribute the baking soda mix.

Directions ::

1. Combine the baking soda and essential oils in your container. A fork works great for really mixing in the oils with the baking soda. For essential oils, I use a combination of Purification and Citrus Blend or Purification and Peppermint. I really like using Peppermint during allergy season. Using Lavender is also great due to its odor fighting and antibacterial qualities. It’s also one of the safest essential oils around children under 2. Just use an oil or combination of oils that you enjoy!

2. Add the lid and let set for 20 minutes to allow the essential oils to really penetrate into the baking soda.

3. Sprinkle the mix liberally on your carpets and let sit for one hour or more. You can even let it sit over night if you like. You can also use your hands to help push the powder down into the carpet but I’ve never found the need to do that. My kids and dogs do plenty of walking across the carpets between sprinkling and vacuuming so they work it in for me!

4. Vacuum. You may want to do a few passes and in different directions to get up all the powder, depending on how much you used and how thick your carpet is.

I use the Carpet Deodorizer on my furniture to help freshen up those as well. And, if you’re wanting to freshen up your mattresses, you can use this same deodorizer but mix in some essential oils that promote rest and sleep.

The great thing about this SIMPLE Carpet Deodorizer is that you can change it up each time you use it. Add different oils to get different scents!

Let us know what essential oils or blends you try and which ones you like!

Happy deodorizing!

I didn’t know it was that easy to make! I’ve never used the powder because something in it makes me cough pretty bad but I bet this is a safer mix.

I know what you mean, Katie! With three kids and two dogs in the house, I don’t want anything that will cause them issues with coughing. So far, we haven’t had any problems with this mix. And it’s so nice to know exactly what is going into it 😉 ~ Stacey
