the wonderful world of washi :: craft book review

Insta-wall complete! #iveyleagueinstawallA few years ago I designed a insta-wall in my house. I used washi tape to adhere some of my favorite photos to the wall in a giant grid. Since then I’ve been fascinated with washi. If you’ve never heard of it before, it’s tape that’s made from washi paper, a handmade all-natural Japanese paper. It feels a little bit like masking tape but doesn’t seem to peel paint off the wall or leave sticky residue like masking tape does. When I first started playing around with these tapes, there were only a few patterns available in the states. It’s become a lot easier to find and less expensive, too!

washiHer first project was making a “keep box” (to keep her favorite drawings and notes and bracelets in) by covering an entire NatureBox box with the washi tape. The Totally Washi book suggested using a shoe box, but I told her she had to work with what we had in our upcycle supplies.

washiNext she made a birthday candle card, which only took about 10 minutes. The hardest part for her was cutting out the flames. I’d love to get a sweet card like this, wouldn’t you? She’s already asked if she could make the Washi Christmas Tree card for our holiday cards this year. 🙂 She could also make a nice Hanukkah card with the candles.

washiShe also made this sweet bracelet for me. It’s not one that’s going to last for a long time since it’s made from a toilet paper roll, but I really do love it and after a few days I’ll probably put it in my own keep box.

Totally Washi! includes 50 creative washi crafts with step-by-step instructions and photos. If you’re anything like me, you need the pictures to make sure you’re on the right track!

Totally Washi! book :: retails for $15.99, currently $10.79

This is the first time I’ve heard of Washi. It looks like there are a ton of crafts you could make with it.

I had never heard of Washi tape but it would be perfect for our family. My daughter and I love hanging stuff on the wall but I hesitate b/c we rent our home. I am afraid of potential damage and don’t want the hassle of filling in nail holes.

We have to resort to scotch tape which doesn’t look as nice and/or has staying power. My daughter enjoys making handmade crafts and giving them as gifts. I also have a keepsake box for sentimental items. I’m sure she’d love to make one of her own. It’s great that you upcycle.
