reading rocks with johnette downing’s new cd :: review and giveaway

Just because I was an English major in college doesn’t mean that I’m a sucker for anything about reading or literature… ok, ok, you got me, I am totally a sucker for anything related to books! However, it’s not just that bookish geekiness that has me loving Reading Rocks by Johnette Downing – it’s the Louisiana bluegrassy flair, acoustic guitar picking, and nice rhythms too.

This album also contains 3 stories read by Johnette and a few short poems too. The story “Why the Oyster Has the Pearl” is about generosity and greed, “Why the Crawfish Lives in the Mud” is about the consequences of laziness, and “Why the Possum Has a Large Grin” explains why deer have antlers and possums have grins. They are all very clever and cute! The stories are available in book form as well!

I dig the groovy tune Story Time – the warm bluesy electric guitar and harmonica make this song super cool. And my favorite lyric is from the song There Once was a Boy Named Cary”

A good place to start is with books in your heart… reading, learning, keep those pages turning; reading, growing, fill your mind with knowing.

Ah, my geeky heart is full of bookish glee! Johnette is a woman after my own heart!

I like that this is a mix of songs, stories and poems. It makes it a nice album to play when we’re just hanging out playing, doing crafts, reading books or cooking – perfect for those indoor activities during the inclement weather of fall and winter. This is a high quality album, and I really recommend it!
