parenting thru divorce book :: review and giveaway

parenting-through-divorceI know this is a sensitive topic and not many like to talk about it, but yet well all know it happens and even more so today the years ago.  Current research indicates that approximately half of all marriages will end in divorce. This makes me very sad.  The numbers are shocking, but the impact on children doesn’t have to be.   Many of you have either experienced divorce, considered divorce, or have a friend in the midst of a divorce. You could all greatly benefit from the information shared in Parenting Through Divorce by Dr. Lisa Rene Reynolds. Dr. Reynolds is a professor of child development and psychology and teaches parenting workshops, and has contributed parenting articles to publications such as All You and the NY Daily News.

Divorce has devastating effects on children. Yet for divorcing parents who carefully consider and manage the intricacies associated with this difficult time, both parents, as seen from the child ‘s perspective, can remain as loving and supportive as they ever were.  I’m not going to lay out my whole story here for everyone but do know that it is hard and there are people out there to help. This book was very helpful in changing my views and helping me make desicions.

Parenting Through Divorce concisely lays out the specific emotions and reactions parents need to anticipate from their children while going through separation, divorce, and its after-math. Rather than weighing parents down with complicated plans, confusing information, and legal terminology, this book takes a common-sense approach, providing readers in a state of emotional distress with the practical, down-to-earth advice they need to sensibly and comfortingly guide their children through this often painful process.

Some of the tricky topics covered by Dr. Reynolds include:

  • Reducing the risk of trauma to your children
  • How to tell your children about the divorce
  • Taking care of yourself.… for your kids
  • Managing parenting time with your ex
  • The biggest mistakes divorcing parents make
  • Special issues for young children, school-age children, and adolescents

I do want to let you all know that this book does help if you are willing to take the time to read it.
