On Linden Square coverWe are finally in the home stretch for Winter and I know a lot of the local schools are having their Mid-Winter Breaks this week or next (well, the schools that didn’t have to cancel their breaks so they can make up school days from having to take more than the allotted number of snow days). With the crazy weather that we have all been experiencing this winter I know that all our readers can appreciate this new story from Sleeping Bear Press.

On Linden Square is the fun story of Stella Mae Culpepper, a young girl on the first day of her winter vacation. As the day ends we are introduced to her Linden Square neighbors, an eclectic group of people who are apparent strangers to one another.

The next morning Stella Mae Culpepper awakens to find that a HUGE winter storm has come through. The snow c0ver of her Linden Square neighborhood ends up prompting the various neighbors to not only interact with Stella Mae, but each other as well.

It’s the first day of winter vacation and Stella Mae Culpepper is bored. As she looks out from the window of her second-floor apartment, she can see all of the usual happenings on Linden Square, her city neighborhood. There are her neighbors. She knows them all by name—or by the names she’s given them, depending on their activities and what Stella Mae can see from her window. Stella Mae thinks she knows her neighbors but she doesn’t really. Everyone in the neighborhood is too busy minding their own business to pay much attention to anyone else. But now it’s the first day of winter vacation and a storm is coming. Not just any storm but a big, wonderful winter storm. It’s a blizzard! And when the snow finally stops and Stella Mae ventures outside to play, something quite marvelous happens on Linden Square.

The end of the book even included a 2-page Glossary that explains various terms used in the story that kids may not be familiar with such as Mahjong, Dizzy Gillespie, and even Babar. This chance to learn more kid-appropriate trivia is always a win with my girls and we usually end up spending as much time on those two pages as we do the entire rest of the story leading up to them!

This fun 40 page story, written and illustrated by Kate Sullivan, is meant for kids ages 6-8.

This sounds like a great premise for a children’s book. With all the snow we’ve had this year it is certainly appropriate!!!
