my favorite things :: spring break edition + help us name our new PET!

It’s spring break here and, wow, what a year to choose to stay home! With cold and snow/rain in the forecast most of the week, we are doing our best to explore our city and keep our sanity. Here are a few things we’re thankful for this week!

1. Our local library. I love what a huge resource the library is! While we definitely use it as our main source of books, there is so much more at the library! Kent District Library locations have several story time options, free programs for kids and adults and play areas. I love that in addition to checking out books you can also check out board games, DVDs and even video games and gaming systems. And when the weather warms up a bit, our library branch even rents bicycles!  My favorite part?  With a library card, it’s all free! (except my overdue fines…)

2. Shortcuts for packing lunches. I was excited to have a week off of packing lunches, but since we are going to have a few day trips this week, I’m thankful to have a few things that help make packing lunch for all of us quick and easy. Two of my go-to lunch products are Wella Bars and Chia Squeezes from Mamma Chia. Those two combined have tons of organic protein, fruits and vegetables. I can just add some carrots or pepper slices and water and we have a healthy lunch.

3.  Our new pet.  My 10-year-old son is a saver.  He has been saving his money forever.  And he finally saved up enough to buy a bearded dragon and everything it needs.  We had him wait until the first day of spring break to buy it so he would have some time to get used to him and get him on a good schedule before he heads back to school.  We all did lots of research ahead of time (which I definitely advise everyone to do before delving into the world of pets) and felt ready to take on this new responsibility.  It’s only been a few days but the whole family has enjoyed watching this guy explore his new habitat (and I kind of want a UVB light and basking lamp for myself–at least I could feel like I was somewhere tropical, right?)  But as fun as this bearded dragon is, he still doesn’t have a name!  Chime in if you have any great ideas for us!

I hope the rest of you are enjoying spring break and find plenty of fun in your own neighborhood if you aren’t heading out on vacation!

Aww, he’s a beaut. There are so many great dragon names out there that would fit when you get to know his personality a little. When I was a little girl we had an Iguana names Igor. Though I can’t believe I googled dragon names and there are a bunch of baby names meaning dragon and some of them have terrible origins. Good for a bearded dragon but not a baby!! I like Falcor (I loved the Neverending Story) and Mushu (loved Mulan too).

Oh, I love those ideas. My sister was a huge Neverending Story fan so I’ve seen the movie tons! My kids haven’t though. We may have to watch it over break!

Awww, we had bearded dragons when my kids were your sons age. Beardsley, Bettie, Bitey, Bing, so many I’ve forgotten. Great pets.

He’s an adorable bearded dragon! So cute and little! My grandsons have a pet bearded dragon at their school in the science lab. They come home talking about him every time that’s their special for the day.

How fun! What a great pet to have in the science lab. He is really tiny–he seems so small for his huge terrarium! We know in a few months he’ll be much bigger!
