Oliver's Tree-1

One of our favorite parts of our school day is called DEAR (Drop Everything And Read). My kids never know when it’s coming and I call DEAR time when we aren’t quite done with our work but everyone’s getting a little restless. If the weather is nice like it has been lately, we’ll go outside and sprawl out on the ground with our books. Sometimes we each have our own book; other times someone reads aloud. One day last week we grabbed our books and my littlest asked her big sister to read Oliver’s Tree out loud. It almost seems like all the happy spilled right out of that book and brought the magic to our back yard, doesn’t it?

Both the story and illustrations for Oliver’s Tree were created by artist and Etsy superstar Kit Chase and the art has a classy, classic feel to it. The story is one that will be just as pertinent in 50 years as it is today. Each new page brings us farther into Oliver’s world and it truly is magical. It tells of three friends playing together and how they love each other. When the friends are playing hide-and-seek, Oliver the elephant is too big to find a good hiding spot. His friends surprise him by helping him out a little! I love how the story shows the power of friendship while also promoting patience and problem-solving.
