In coronavirus/ mother's day

expectations vs reality :: quarantine thoughts as we approach mother’s day

Here is a glimpse from this past weekend. Saturday’s are for rotting our brains on devices. I predict brain matter will start leaking out of their ears by lunch time. Only the cat is screen free, but judge him too for napping on the couch at 9:45 am.

As we start another month with no activities on the calendar, we are letting ourselves pass some time in this way. I talk a big talk about screen rules during the week, but Friday-Sunday we do relax. We’ve even relaxed on some week day rules as we shelter in place. Work with your circumstances and find a good balance.

I feel like I can hardly remember the beginning of the pandemic. I know I was really worried about the device time scene being all we did for months on end. I am happy to report that while we have our time for screens, we have been very productive too. Balance is the key. I really had no idea what to expect, but the reality of being home hasn’t been anything like I imagined.

An account I follow (@simplywellbalanced) posted this at the same time as I posted the picture above. We had to laugh at our similar theme of thoughts. Another great quote I saw this week was “Motherhood is the hardest thing I’ve ever loved.” That’s for sure!

I’m growing to love this time with everyone home. How many times do we say that our kids are growing up too fast and we want life to slow down so we can put them in a bubble. Pretend that bubble is your house and your wish was granted these last few months! It hasn’t been perfect, but we are finding our way.

It’s not always easy to be content in all things. I strive to be present, content, and thankful (with God’s help of course!). This time of year is usually so brutally busy that I can hardly think. We’ve been given this gift of an empty calendar and while I don’t want it to always be like this, I’m glad we could experience what it’s like to be home and together in such an extended way.

think of others

Life will eventually go back to something that resembles normal. Will you be proud of how you spent your time together? Will your kids have fond memories? Did you take time to check in on others and encourage them? Did you give God more of your time and attention? These are all areas in my life that I’m trying to be more diligent about. Less perfectionism, more prioritizing of things that matter. Getting outside has helped me have a better mindset as well.

take a walk

There will be time again to stroll the aisles of Target, admire the décor at Hobby Lobby, catch up on our favorite Crime Podcasts, get nails done, meet a friend for Chipotle, drop our kids off at school, and all the things that make us happy as moms. For now, I will choose to soak up the time at home. If I’m being painfully honest, my favorite thing right now is sleeping in. I’m a ridiculous night owl and now I can have my late nights and sleep too!

Easter 2020

I hope you have a Happy Mother’s Day – even if it is just another day at home with the people that made you a mom. Hold them close and enjoy them.
