a simple diy :: teacher door hanger

I thought this would be a cute back-to-school DIY for your teachers.  This will be my daughter’s third year in public school and I have made their teachers these cute DIY Teacher Door Hangers monogrammed with their names as teacher gifts for the past two years.  These pencils are so easy to make the first batch I made I had Welcome painted on them, but I really like the simplicity of the standard yellow pencil with a bit of glitter to jazz it up.

    • Large flat paintbrush
    • Writer paintbrush

    • Eye Hooks
    • Drill with a drill bit to fit the eye hooks
    • Spray varnish

STEP 1 :: Dismantle your pallet and cut it to your desired length  My is approximately 18″ to 24″ long by 4″ wide.  You will use your Miter Saw to cut 45 degree angles for the point of your pencil.  Then you will use the Jig Saw to cut a half moon shape for the end of your pencil.

STEP 2 :: Now you can paint the wooden part of your pencil traditional yellow (bright yellow) leaving a zig zag line for your sharpened pencil point.  Use a large flat paintbrush to keep from leaving lines in your painting.  I used a one inch brush.

STEP 3 :: Paint the end of your pencil pink and leave a space for the ferrule on the pencil.  I coated the pencil heavily in Mod Podge and sprinkled the glitter on heavily.  Once the glitter was on I pressed it down to make sure that it stuck to the wood.

STEP 4 :: Next you get to monogram your name of your teacher on the pencil.  If the teacher had a long name I wrote Miss. or Mrs. sideways where the ferrule is, but if the teacher has a short name I wrote it the same size as the teacher’s name.  I used a writer to paint the name on basically a paintbrush size 4 or smaller.

STEP 5 :: Last you will add your spray varnish to seal the paint and add your eye hooks.
