a simple diy :: silhouette wood slice ornament

“It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas everywhere you go”, but it is only October!  When I see all the Christmas decorations I start thinking about all the Christmas presents I need to make, and if I plan to sell ornaments this year I need to get started!  Last year I make these cute Wood Slice Ornaments because I wanted to swap from my 4 X 4 inch wood blocks to these wood slices.  Not that it is easier, but because I wanted to see how all my ornament designs look on the wood slices.  That’s how I came up with this simple diy :: Silhouette Wood Slice Ornament.  This would be a great gift for grandparents and other close family members.

Materials::

  • Ribbon
  • Eye Hooks
  • Paintbrushes
  • Glitter paint
  • Drill and bit to fit your Eye Hooks
  • Sealant

STEP 1::  The first thing you need to do is go to my DIY Wood Slice Ornaments to see how to prepare your wood slices.

STEP 2:: Next you need to paint the inside of the wood slice white.   If you choose you could use black for your background color.  Either way make sure to smooth out your paint lines so that you don’t have any ripples in your silhouette.

STEP 3:: Once your background  color dries you can draw your silhouette in pencil then paint it black.  If you choose you can also add your child’s name as I did.

STEP 4::  Then when it dries you can add a coat of glitter to your ornament to make it shimmer.  Once the glitter dries you can fix it with your choice of fixative.  Now you can pre-drilled a hole into the top of your ornament and secured the Eye Hook.  Finally when it is secured you can add your ribbon to hang it on the Christmas tree to enjoy.

    I am dying to try this for grandparent gifts! But I’m unclear how to actually draw the silhouette 🙈

      Just take a profile pic of you children. Size the picture to a 3″ x 3″ if you are unsure how to do this print it out as a 5X7. Just make sure it not a close up. If you are not the best drawer, you can hold the image up to a window to trace–then you can trace it onto the wood slice. If you paint the wood slice you should be able to see your lines. I hope this helps.
