diy baby bum balm :: a natural recipe

Baby Bum Balm
There is nothing cuter than a sweet little baby butt! Unfortunately, those soft little bums tend to be quite sensitive and can quickly become irritated. When this happens, it’s important to have the right tools on hand to combat your little one’s sore bottom. That’s where this simple baby bum balm recipe comes in handy.

This balm is something I discovered when we brought our third baby home from the hospital. When he was very young, everything irritated his skin. We tried every product out there to help soothe his skin, but nothing worked. Finally, I figured out that going natural was the only thing that would help heal his sore skin. He is now going on five years old, and to this day, if he has any skin irritation, I reach for the coconut oil, one of the key components in this recipe.

With another baby on the way, I decided to be prepared and whip up a batch of this balm to have on hand from the start. It is quick to make, and a small amount lasts quite awhile. When I use this balm, I love that I know exactly what I’m putting on my precious baby. No mystery ingredients like in store bought creams. And bonus…it smells amazing!

  • Heat over low heat until all ingredients are melted and have blended together. This works great on a stove top, as long as your burners don’t get too hot. It is not recommended to heat these ingredients using a microwave, as the integrity of the ingredients can be compromised by doing so. We have a wood stove, so we heated the mixture on there.

  • Remove from heat source, and allow to slightly cool.
  • Add lavender oil and mix. For a batch this size, I typically add about 20 drops. You can add the amount you feel is best for your baby.
  • Pour mixture into a glass container while it is still warm.
  • Allow balm to set up, and you are finished! Yay!
