destination dig vbs :: day 3 :: i spy bottles

Destination Dig VBS is off to a great start and our students are digging to find truths about Jesus. They are hearing about the truths in Bible stories read to them by their teachers. Craft’s for Day 3 students will be making an I-Spy Bottle. Students will get to make an I-Spy Bottle to collect their excavation items in to remind them that Jesus is the Son God promised.  This craft was designed with 2-5 year-olds in mind.  I wanted them to be able to do their crafts all-by-themselves or with as little help as possible from adults.

STEP 1::  The first thing you need to do if you want it to be colorful is dye your rice. Take one cup of rice and put it into a ziplock bag then add a tablespoon of vinegar to the rice will a few drops of your food color choice.

STEP 2::  Zip your ziplock bag and mash the rice with the vinegar and food color.  You will know when you can stop.  Then you will place the rice on a surface to dry.  I used cookie sheets.

STEP 3::  Once the rice has dried you can place it into the containers.  You can create a paper funnel to help you put the rice into the bottle.  If you are working with preschoolers I would make sure to fill the container with rice half way and let the kids dig I the sand for their excavation items.  My kids were allowed to use as many as they could find.

The kids a blast digging for their treasures.  Make sure to have some sort of containers for them to dig it to get the full effect of the Destination Dig theme.  Once they are finished I would make sure to hot glue the lids on so that messes are not made.

Will you be attending VBS this year?
