Have yourself a Merry SIMPLE Christmas

On November 29, our season of family holiday traditions will begin for 2014. We will bundle up and load up the kids and head to the local tree farm to find our perfect Christmas tree. We’ll size them up and debate which one will fit the best.

Then we’ll strap that beauty to the top of our car, take it home and put it in the same place where all our Christmas trees before it has sat. The kids will wait {not so patiently} as we wrap it in lights and then it is their turn…decorating!

It’s the same tradition I had as a child. My dad would spend the morning trimming the bottom to get the tree straight and, after he had given up and conceded that it would always have a slight lean, my siblings and I would go to work decorating.

We’d reminisce about each of the ornaments we were placing. Reminders of places we’ve been or loved ones. And now my kids do the same thing as they decorate the tree.

It’s our first tradition of the season and my most favorite! Maybe it’s because it feels like the Christmas season has officially begun for us or maybe it’s because of the nostalgia I feel when that scent of pine fills my house.

  13. We open one present on Christmas Eve, jammies and a book, and then prepare cookies and milk for Santa. My kids sprinkle food on the lawn for the reindeer!

  14. We take a pic of the kids and they get to make their own ornament every year using the picture. It’s fun to look back at all of them!

  26. We have our big Christmas celebration on Christmas Eve. Every year we have a late dinner and go to a late mass!

  27. We have lots, but my favorite has to be that every Christmas Eve, my kiddos and I bake Christmas cookies for Santa and them put them out! We laugh and eat and have lots of fun!

  44. An old family tradition that we make homemade tamales every year in December. As kids we looked forward to eating them but as we got older we were allowed to make them as well, which was also very fun.

  52. We cook together. I let the kids help me decorate the cookies, and if I make a pie they help me put the leaf decorations on the apple pie!

  55. Our tradition is to spend Xmas eve at my grandparents, exchanging gifts, and then Christmas day someone else hosts and we have a large Christmas dinner.

  56. Every year on the 23rd we open a big box that has new pajamas for everyone, a couple books, a movie and snacks. (Christmas at my hosue is the 24th since the kids go to their fathers on Christmas)

  65. My favorite Christmas tradition is going to my moms house Christmas morning for breakfast and presents. This year we have my granddaughter and it’s her first Christmas. She’s 6 months old, but I know she’s going to want to rip her presents open. Of course, she’ll want to eat everything too or I should say chew on everything. She got her first teeth at 4 months old.   75. One of my favorite holiday traditions is opening one gift on Christmas Eve. Each of us get to open one present, usually it’s new pj’s or cologne 🙂

  96. Growing up my family and I would attend church for Christmas Eve, then eat snacks and open one present that evening. Now, I have my own family, my baby girls first Christmas this year and we’ll start our own family traditions– leaving cookies, milk for santa, reading a Christmas book each night before bed leading up to Christmas, attending church and eating snacks.   99. one year we were all separated christmas eve and all went to get chinese food on our own. and now we all have it every year as tradition!

  102. I really love having a Jesus birthday cake. Also, there’s a family near us that has a real fireworks display on Christmas Eve and a bonfire and then Santa comes. I haven’t been in years as we travel out of state for Christmas usually, but hopefully next year we can go!

  103. My family tradition would be how we annually enjoy listening to Christmas music and CHristmas Carols.

  131. It’s a charming Dutch tradition to stuff your boots full of straw for “Santa’s reindeer”:: My Grandfather’s mother passed this tradition down, and my grand kids do it!

  135. We pick out a new ornament every year that has something to do with some kind of event or activity we had going on that previous year. And of course, decorating the tree/house.

  159. All of my favorite traditions seem to center around the food! My grandma’s cornbread sausage stuffing, the peanut butter fudge, the potato candy she made all still say Holidays to me.

  168. Because my Dad was a farmer when I was young we opened our gifts on Christmas Eve. We have carried that tradition with my husband and 4 sons.

  170. Our extended family gets together to bake cookies, and the kids decorate them. I always look forward to this each year.
