amazon flute :: learn an instrument this summer for under $80

disclaimer no giveaway

We finished our last day of distance learning on Friday and now we are officially on summer break. It is not normal for me to start off summer break with so little ambition to make chore charts and plan fun activities. Usually I’m declaring how screen free we are going to be, pulling out playdoh, checking out library books, and making homemade lemonade.

We are 80+ days into our sheltering in place. I haven’t been to the gym, gotten my hair done, or had a solid moment to myself in a long while. I’m keeping humans alive, fed, clean, dressed, happy, and occupied at a pace I can barely sustain. I know this season is temporary and I will finish strong, but we are not kicking off summer with the usual level of enthusiasm.

I am however looking for new ideas that take little effort on my part to keep the kids busy in a productive way. We are continuing our virtual piano lessons and keeping up with practicing instruments. Thank goodness for virtual FREE resources.

That was a big intro, but I wanted to talk about THIS Amazon flute. It’s very affordable and from my own experience, you kind of have to teach yourself this instrument from the beginning. I began playing the flute in 6th grade and my daughter started learning in 5th grade. I believe that is a good age to be responsible with an instrument and capable of learning notes and fingering. You don’t have to hire someone for private lessons either.

THIS is the book that my daughter used to learn. We also love our Time Timer for practice. She taught herself the fingering and we watched YouTube videos to learn the proper way to position your lip and breath. When she first began she would get dizzy. Guess what, there’s a thousand YouTube videos to help you improve your technique so you can play without using your air incorrectly. She was playing short songs in the first month. Now she’s playing specials for church and she picked up the flute 9 months ago.

Here is a nerdy video of our family’s special music for an online church service. We are all pretty average in our talents. The kids have not had formal lessons. That may be very evident when you watch the video. 🙂 I do hope it inspires you to want to learn an instrument. If we can do it, anyone can! If you watch this whole video you will be rewarded with bloopers at the end.

The Glory Hole C Flute comes with a case, tuning rod, cloth, joint grease, and gloves. I can’t say that we’ve used the fancy gloves, but nice touch. It’s very highly rated on Amazon and I can say that we’ve been so pleased with it, we have two! One for me and one for Annabelle. I hadn’t played the flute in over a decade, but it came back to me and I’m learning more thanks to YouTube.

I did my research because our music teacher at school was NOT encouraging a cheap Amazon flute. However, it was recommended by experts who played a very expensive flute and the Glory flute. I couldn’t hear a difference and they agreed that it was a decent flute for a great price. We originally bought a used flute that needed some work and it was going to be $200 for repairs. I just couldn’t fork over the money. Not only did I get this flute for under $80, but I did splurge for the warranty just in case it was cheap and broke. Knowing the cost of flute repairs, it seemed like a good idea to have a warranty to fall back on. Plus, Amazon makes everything right!

In the end, our music teacher borrowed our flutes for a school competition when someone broke their flute last minute. We had a good giggle about the cheap Amazon flutes coming to the rescue. It’s been a great purchase so far and I hope you consider getting one too.

If you’re looking for a productive activity for your kids this summer, I vote you consider getting them started on learning the flute. All you need is this flute and this book to get started for under $90. If you have any questions, feel free to comment and I will happily try to answer them. I know buying an instrument is a big deal and I want to assure you this is a great flute for a fantastic price.

What a wonderful way to spend time as a family! Even more precious in non-pandemic times, I’m sure, but it’s a great way to create memories AND teach and establish fulfilling hobbies. That’s awesome! And you ALL sounded great!! 🙂

P,S, I started playing the flute in 4th grade and played it for four years, I think. I still pick it up once in a while, but I have forgotten so much. Maybe I should use this summer to reacquaint myself with my woodwind!

Thank you Heather! You most certainly should bring out your flute again. I had my flute from 6th grade and mites ate all the pads. It was going to be over $300 to repair. So to buy an $80 flute seemed more reasonable.

Holy moly! It never would have occurred to me that that could happen. Wow, yeah…$80 was definitely a bargain comparatively!
