adding some fun into your spring break staycation

It is the season of Spring Break and while some of you have fabulous plans to visit places near and far, others of us are looking for ways to make memories as we plan a staycation. No matter what your budget is there are many fun ways to keep everyone entertained, here’s just a few ideas that I thought I’d share on how I will be keeping my kiddos busy during our spring break staycation.

The SIMPLE Moms summer fun on spring break
1) Visit Favorite “Summer” Destinations :: I have found that my kids really enjoy seeing some of their favorite summer destinations before the summer crowds descend. Last year we visited one of our nearest National Parks and enjoyed the lack of other visitors as well as reduced off-season rates for nearby establishments.

The SIMPLE Moms more play time and less wait time
2) Avoid the Crowds :: the majority of our local schools all have Spring Break the same week which can make the more local activities quite crowded during Spring Break week. Not a problem if you don’t mind repeatedly standing in lines at your local children’s museum, botanical gardens, or zoo, however you can sometimes avoid those crowds with a minimal amount of travel. Oddly enough the city about an hour away from where we live has a different break schedule and their hands-on science center will be a perfect place to visit during our staycation.

3) Help Others :: whether or not you’re kids are ready to volunteer with you at a local shelter, soup kitchen, or charity there are many ways to help others while everyone is on break. My little ones enjoy cleaning the yard up for my grandparents, drawing cards for the residents our local Veteran’s home, and helping to clear out our gently used items to donate at a local outreach. This year we will be decorating lunch bags for a local children’s food pantry and my kids are excited to get started!

4) Do the Unexpected :: it is easy to make a fun memory that your whole family will treasure with just a little change to the status quo. Everything from ice cream for breakfast, letting the kids pick the dinner menus, a day-long movie marathon, or a trip to the dollar store on balloon day can be easy and inexpensive ways to shake things up and possibly make a new family tradition.

How do you keep things interesting on your family’s staycation spring break?
