a taste of kenya with kay kay’s alphabet safari :: review + giveaway

disclaimer giveaway

Sleeping Bear Press logoSummer reading club has ended for us but that doesn’t mean that I’ve let up on finding new and engaging books for my girls to enjoy. Our latest find from Sleeping Bear Press, Kay Kay’s Alphabet Safari, turned out to be a big hit with all the kids.

imageUnlike some alphabet books where each page is simply a letter and drawing or sentence of a corresponding item, in Kay Kay’s Alphabet Safari there is an actual story that showcases the animals A-Z. This ‘big kid’ take on an alphabet book made Kay Kay’s Alphabet Safari the perfect book to engage both my 4-year-old who was listening, and my 6-year-old who was helping to read. (FYI the intended ages are 6-9 years.)

The book begins with the children at the Star of Hope School showing their new school building to their friend Kay Kay. Kay Kay immediately decides that the walls are too white and bare. He decides to paint animals from A-Z on the walls for the children.

The story continues as Kay Kay sets out on his walk (safari) to think about the animals he will paint for each letter. Along the way he sees many of his animal friends like Quagga, Porcupine, Giraffe, Nyala, and even Zebra.

The book has some great extras at the end including a “Say it in Swahili!” page where you can learn some Swahili words and phrases. There is also a map of Africa which shows where Bungoma, Kenya is located.

image

Sandwiched in between these there is some information about the Star of Hope School, which I really enjoyed finding out was an actual place in Bungoma, Kenya. Even more fascinating for my 6-year-old was to discover that the Kay Kay from the book was based on an actual person (Amos) in Bungoma who has been helping to paint the walls of the Star of Hope School for the children.

If you’d like to learn more about the beautiful smiling faces of the children at the Star of Hope orphanage you can visit their website www.StarOfHopeCentre.org!
