winter is coming :: 3 tips for winterizing your windows

After a lifetime of living in dwellings with sub-par windows I am somewhat of an expert on making sure that once the temps start to drop and the snow starts to fly our heat isn’t pouring out through the windows. Of course, replacing those windows would be the ultimate fix, but sometimes you just need to be practical.

So, in the interest of saving your heat bill from skyrocketing here are my top three tips on keeping the heat from fleeing out your windows this winter.

1) Check The Seals :: whether you have amazingly old windows like we do, or newer models that just aren’t cutting it, having a good seal is important. Figure out what is the best fit for your windows and your living situation (renters will want a less permanent solution versus actual home owners). Caulk, foam tape, weather stripping, window sealant, and even felt are all great options but as with any project you need to make sure you have the right tool (or in this case seal) for the job.

2) Put up Curtains :: not only is my second tip functional, it is fashionable. A good set of heavy curtains can make a huge difference in keeping the cold out and the warm in. Personally, I would recommend curtains lined with blackout material and a curtain rod that keeps the top of the curtains relatively close to the wall to help cut down on air flow. These are a winter fix so feel free to switch them out for something more appropriate for the summer months!

3) Use Window Insulator Kits :: while these are about the ugliest thing you can do to keep the air from flowing they really do make a difference. Basically you apply a special double sided tape around the window, cover it with a plastic, and then use a hair dryer to shrink the plastic and form a tight seal. On more than one occasion I have noticed an instantaneous difference in the temp around a window after applying these kits. If you have multiple windows to cover I suggest getting the plastic and tape in large rolls.

While warmer temps have been holding out for us locally I know that starting next week I really need to get a move on making sure our windows taken care of for winter. What ways do you winterize your house to help keep the heat from escaping?
