snow globe birthday :: my 40th birthday

The Snow Globe Family is MY favorite children’s book. It’s a sweet book about a family in a big house and a similar family living in a snow globe. They are all hoping for a big snowstorm. The book parallels the two families and it reminds me of the excitement we would have over a big snowstorm. We would even go sledding at night on special occasions, just like in this book.Snow Globe Family

Oh, when will it snow again? Wonders the little family who lives in the snow globe. They long for a snowstorm? If only someone in the big family would pick up the snow globe and give it a shake. Baby would love to. She notices the little family, but the snow globe is too high for her to reach. But then Baby is alone during a snowstorm. Will the snow globe family get a chance to go sledding, too?

I have loved and collected snow globes since I was a little girl. I knew it was a happy place inside those glittery snowy globes. Two of my dearest friends turned a room in our church into a snow globe so we could celebrate my 40th birthday.

Having a birthday during a pandemic has made for lots of creative celebrations. It’s getting a bit chilly for a birthday parade and outdoor dining isn’t allowed in California, so their idea was perfect in every way. Having a big 40th birthday wasn’t actually something I ever wanted. I feel too much pressure to mingle with everyone and don’t enjoy big parties in my honor. Having a quiet dinner with two of my friends, relaxing, and eating my favorite foods was absolutely my love language.

ginny's 40th birthdayBesides their gift of loving me so fiercely, they also collected some notes from some of my friends and family. They read some to me. There were a few tears from the way too kind sentiments and lots of laughs too because I have hilarious friends. A common theme was all the awkward moments I’ve shared with people. All you can do is laugh about it. They put all these notes in a scrapbook so I can cherish them forever.

So how does one create a birthday party in a snow globe?

    • Strawberry Salad with Poppy Seed DressingPlan birthday recipient’s favorite dinner
    • Hang snowflake decor from the ceilings and decorate the room with snowflakes
    • Use a projection snowflake light to illuminate the room
    • Play gentle music
    • Candles for ambiance
    • Collect letters from people who can’t attend

This truly was my most memorable birthday. I had no idea what my friends were up to, but they promised me that it was low key. To end a very different year on a beautiful note was exactly what I needed. I hope you can recreate this delightful birthday theme for someone and give them an evening that they won’t soon forget.

If the party wasn’t amazing enough, they also got me a keepsake I will treasure forever. I have this beautiful engraved snow globe from Things Remembered. “Happy 40th Birthday. We love you, Ginny. December 2020″

40th birthday reflections

I have such amazing examples of how to be a really good friend. I hope that I can bless others in the ways that my friends have shown such love towards me. Having sweet sisters in Christ is a gift that I don’t ever want to take for granted.

I used to think 40 was super ancient and really didn’t think too fondly of the number creeping up on me. Now it’s here and feels really unimportant. I for sure don’t have wisdom, but I do have perspective. This birthday is the same as the last 39.

I thank God for my life, family, friends, and church. I am grateful to spend 39 of my 40 birthdays in Michigan – plus there was snow this year!

Serve God, love others, and make time for the important things in life. That’s what I plan to do should I get a crack at 40 more years.
