last minute father’s day gift idea :: photo frame matte :: craft

Father's Day frame beforeFather’s Day is tomorrow and I know there are people who have had gifts ready for weeks for their dad/husband/other significant father figure in their life.  I am not that person.

I have had my dad covered for over a month now, but when it came to choosing a gift for my husband I’ve been floundering.  I know we’re going to get him a new grill but I wanted to make sure we did something that was more personal for him as well.

Thankfully I remembered an idea I’d used a couple years back that could be recycled this year (honestly, you could do this every year if you wanted).  Super easy, inexpensive (cost me less than $12!), this photo frame matte decorated by our kids was a hit once again!

Father's Day craft

So in 3 easy steps ::

  1. Find a photo frame and matte.
  2. Let your kids decorate the matte with the art medium of your choice.  We used colored pencils, but crayons, markers, paint, or stamps are also great ideas.
  3. Put the newly decorated matte into the fame with a photo of the kids!

TIPS ::

  • Father's Day Photo Matte CraftFind a matte/frame combo that has enough space for your little artists to work on and make sure the frame won’t cover up a significant portion of their art when done.  I went with a square frame this time that had a large white matte but our original project was done on a 5×7 frame matted for a 4×6 photo.
  • Divide up the workable space on the matte for your kids equally. My 5 year old would have colored the entire matte if I let her, but then my 3 year old wouldn’t have had the chance to write “D” about 30 times (as in, “D” for Dad)
  • Get creative – if your kids are older you could get a black matte and gel pens, younger kids can do fingerprint creations with mom’s help.

Wrap and enjoy!  My girls were SOOO excited about their creation that my 3 year old busted the surprise of this Father’s Day gift creation as soon as my husband got home on Friday.  He didn’t mind though and is excited to hang this latest creation from his girls on the wall at his office.

Happy Father’s Day!!!
