include reading on your summer fun to-do list {#SummerReading}

SummerReadingHeaderWe have OFFICIALLY been on summer break for one week now. Tomorrow starts week two.We have begun checking off all the fun we want to have this summer – starting with one fun thing at a time!

My three oldest children simply love to read. Anything to do with reading is fun for them, and they often opt for quiet time and a book by their side…or me reading to them. Lately, I have found my oldest playing teacher with my 5 and 2 year old. I simply love the creativity and fun they are having. One of the extra activities they do every day at “their school” is reading. My oldest reads to them. Talk about priceless memories!! They sit intentely listening and watching her every move as words pour out of her mouth.

In relation to this, I have to share the Summer Reading Challenge from Scholastic. If you have readers on your hands like I do, check this super fun opportunity out. Even if your children aren’t completely in to reading, this may give them the gusto they need to keep reading during the summer!

There is a FREE site kids can pop over to this summer and engage them with reading and the fun related to that. If you haven’t checked out the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge, let’s do it now!

Now in its 8th year, the Summer Reading Challenge program is dedicated to stopping the “Summer Slide” and getting kids to read throughout the summer months when school is out.

Starting May 5, 2014, kids can log their reading minutes (online and on smartphones) as they Read for the World Record, enter sweepstakes to win fabulous prizes, and earn digital rewards when they complete weekly reading challenges.

This year’s Summer Reading Challenge theme is “Reading Under the Stars” (powered by EVEREADY®). Throughout the summer, kids will read around the galaxy and unlock star constellations as they log reading minutes.

In 2013, Scholastic inspired more than 130,000 kids from 4,200 schools in all 50 States and 31 countries to set a new record for summer reading of 176 million-plus minutes!

My daughter loves to check things off a list, much like I do. So this is right up her alley when it comes to tracking her reading minutes. It’s fun to watch the numbers continuously increase!!  As a parent, you can permit her reading minutes to go towards a school goal as well! Not only can she do this, but there is a fun little Reading Timer app she is ALL about too!

Additionally, here are some more fun things  you as the adult can emphasize and participate in together:

  • Every Monday, check Scholastic on Twitter for the #MondayMinutes. See the total number of minutes kids have read to date!
  • Every Friday, follow the Scholastic Facebook calendar for Friday Freebies!
  • Every Friday, check out the Summer Reading Challenge Pinterest Board for a new collage of summer books.
  • Tune in to Facebook on June 21 for the Summer Solstice Facebook Chat for Parents
