home renovation tips and tricks

Renovating a home can be a struggle for most parents. With kids and a thousand other things to do, it often takes a backseat. Our bedroom makeover takes forever to finish, but at least we were able to start it despite having a crazy schedule. A house renovation is an even more significant challenge that we hope to overcome soon enough. It involves tons of planning and agreement with your spouse. It’s more than just choosing what bedding to use or what murals to install. Home renovation needs careful planning. So, as I put it in my things to do, I want to share what I think are the essential factors to consider when you start renovating your home.

Have a Plan

Before you even start your renovation process, you have to know what you want to achieve. It would be best to have a clear picture of how your house would look like while taking into consideration your lifestyle and needs. For us, it would be mandatory to have a separate room where I can homeschool the kids.

Create a Budget

Home renovation will take a chunk of your savings, so it is important to know all the costs that you are likely to shoulder when you do. In fact, this should be on top of your list to consider. When you have set your budget, stick to it. Most homeowners who do not factor this in, always end up spending more draining their savings. It would be best to have a contingency fund. Always compare materials and designs and go for the ones that match your budget.

Look for a Reliable Contractor

If you are planning to have a major renovation, it is wise to look for a reliable contractor. This step is a tedious but necessary process if you don’t want to end up stressed about the construction. Make sure that your contractor has licenses and has a good track record of quality work. Do your research about their past projects. Additionally, your contractor should understand and meet your expectations. You can ask for referrals from friends and family.

Know Local Regulations

If you would like to DIY your home renovation, don’t forget to check local council regulations. If any of your renovation work is not compliant with local laws, you might end up paying penalties that add unnecessary costing for your renovation. If you are working with a contractor, make sure that they transact with local officials and secure building permits.

Secure Insurance

Many of homeowners who carry out renovations fail to get insurance. Homeowner’s insurance can serve as your security blanket from potential theft and other possible damages resulting from the construction. For example, home insurance quotes from Allstate include theft, fire and smoke, water damage, and falling objects, to name a few. Insurance coverage differ from each company. For home renovation, it is best to get whole home coverage. This insurance helps you protect your home structure like the roof and walls.

People have different reasons why they want to renovate. Some homeowners choose to renovate because they want to sell their home for a profit in the future. Others do so because they want to enjoy their life in a beautiful home. Whatever your reason may be, you must discuss your home renovation with your family. This is important as there will be additional costs and plenty of adjustments to make while the home improvement is ongoing. But, at the end of the day, when construction’s finally over, your reward is watching your space transform into a masterpiece that you will treasure with your loved ones.

I think it would be nice if a home that is more than 10 years old would be renovated at least once in a while to make sure that it will look new. Thanks for the advice that major repairs should be done by a contractor to make sure that it looks perfect. My husband told me that we should renovate the exterior of our home since the sidings have come off and rotted away along with the paint that has started to peel, so doing this might help us sell off our home when we decide to do so.
