Home Hazards To Address When Winter Hits

Winter might be the perfect time to wrap up warm, get cozy, and stay firmly rooted on your couch, but before you can relax, you might want to make sure that the home is secure and healthy first. There are a few hazards that can be particularly problematic or even expensive when the cold weather comes in, so let’s look at a few of them and how you can address them before they become a real headache.

Invest In Regular De-Icing

If your home is prone to freezing temperatures, then your paths, steps, and driveways might be a lot more likely to become slippery hazards. De-icing early and often can significantly reduce the risk of slips and falls for family, visitors, and delivery drivers, which can lead to injuries that you might be liable for. You can use rock salt, grit, or even eco-friendly de-icers, which can be very helpful if there are pets in the area. Just make sure that you shovel away any snow before applying it, and don’t apply it when the snow is still falling, as the moisture content can make it less effective.

Be Mindful Of that Organic Mess

If you have a garden that’s full of greenery, or just live in an area with a lot of it, then some of the organic debris from those plants, mixed with moisture, can form an algae surface on things like patios, decking, sidewalks, and brickworks. For some homes, moss might be a persistent problem, too. When the temperatures drop, these surfaces can become wet and slippery, and even more so when they freeze, so doing some pressure washing to clean them can make a big difference. A clean surface freezes more evenly and is easier to treat with de-icer.

Secure your exteriors

The exterior of your home is something to pay attention to and particularly, what’s protecting and insulating your home. That means your walls, doors and windows.

The exterior walls need attention every now and then to make sure they’re in good condition and not compromised in any way. It’s good to consider options like durable siding in order to add both a new look to your space, whilst also improving the home’s efficiency and boosting its value.

Make Sure The Home Heats Up Reliably

Don’t underestimate how much of a danger the cold can be in the winter, leading to weakened immune systems, interrupted sleep, and even hypothermia. Check that your heating system, be it central heating, a space heater, or a fireplace, is working efficiently and that you arrange for its routine service, which you should be doing once a year.

Keep The Moisture Levels consistent

In the winter, we keep our windows shut more often and keep the heating running. Add to that the fact that we’re more likely to let our laundry dry indoors, and we can end up creating the perfect conditions for moisture and mold. These issues can trigger allergies, irritate breathing, and damage your home if ignored, so be sure to ventilate rooms daily, even with quick “burst ventilation” sessions, to refresh indoor air. Similarly, when you’re engaging in activities that create a lot of moisture, like cooking or showering, use extractor fans if you have them, or standalone fans to prevent the buildup of moisture in one area.

Get to know the kind of problems that your home is prone to when winter arrives, typically based on the climate of your area. Next year, getting the equipment you need in advance can make it a lot easier to deal with it when it comes around.
