a simple craft :: painting vases

A pop of color can brighten up almost any room. An easy and very inexpensive way to add a bit of color here or there is with a painted vase!

What you will need:

  • A glass vase — this is a great way to reuse the vases you have stored away in your cabinet or you can pick up vases inexpensively from local thrift stores. Hint: for this method, you will want a vase with a wider top so you can reach paintbrush inside.
  • Paint — I’m using the Martha Stewart Crafts™ Paint from Michaels. I went with the high gloss finish and only used one bottle (doing a few coats) for one vase.
  • Paintbrush — make sure your paintbrush is long enough to reach the bottom of your vase. Also, a softer, wider brush works well.
  • Old newspapers or a drop cloth to cover your work surface

What to do:

Make sure you are using a clean dry vase. Simply squirt some of your paint in a little cup or in a little bowl and begin painting the inside of your vase. Don’t worry if you see brush streaks at first. Those will get covered up as we apply more coats of paint. Yes, this project takes a few coats of paint!

After you have completely coated the inside of your vase, let it dry for a few hours. Letting the vase dry between coats helps the next coat of paint go on more smoothly and cover more evenly.

Continue adding coats until you feel you’ve covered it enough. Tip — If your vase is going to be in a windowsill, you might need to do quite a few layers to make sure the paint is thick enough and the light won’t shine through. If your vase is going to be sitting up on a shelf or out of direct light, you can get away with less coats of paint!

If you are planning on using the painted vase to hold a bouquet of fresh flowers, be sure to cure the paint after you are finished painting.

I love these vases because you can place them in a room with or without flowers and they look great! And, because they only cost a few dollars to make, you can afford to make multiple vases in different colors to switch up your decor throughout the year! I can’t wait to do a few vases in some nice rich colors for Fall!

Another fun idea is add some stenciling or stick-on letters to your vase. So many fun ideas!
