Reading is something we have always enjoyed doing together as a family. I’m so thankful that my girls love to read! Taking trips to the library to grab a few new reads happens quite frequently in our home. The best part of buying books however, is getting to keep them and not be on a timeline to finish them. That is basically what my oldest said when she looked over the 3-pack of books we recently received from Thomas Nelson as part of their Tommy Mommy program.

thomas nelson book bundle august 2013
From the cover, God Bless You and Good Night had my attention.  I mean look at that adorable little baby and mommy!  This is the perfect addition to any bedtime routine.  It talks about bath time, snack time, prayer time and more.  It has adorable rhymes and equally adorable illustrations. Towards the end are two sweet owls cuddling too.  Anyone who knows me, knows this is icing on the cake 😉

Precious Moments: The Little Book of Prayers was equally adorable, starting with the cover.  My Adalynn was drawn to that one right away.  It is a book of exactly what you would imagine.  Prayers!  Prayers for little ones that can be understood fully.  We have been reading one prayer from this book daily.  It’s fun to see what they pick or what I randomly land on to read.

My 7 year old has read Everybody Can Help Somebody two times already in the last week. She said she is really enjoying this one!  This book tells an eye opening story of how everyone can help someone.  It is so beautifully written.  I enjoyed reading it on my own when the girls went to sleep.  Lili seems to really be pulling the lessons from this one.  Here is a synopsis, since they can do a better job explaining this one:

Little Denver grew up very poor, and he didn’t get to go to school. As time passed, Denver decided to hop a train to the big city for a different life. But that life was difficult, and Denver spent many years as a homeless man. But God showed His love through two people who were very different from Denver.

Based on Same Kind of Different As Me, the emotional tale of Denver Moore’s life story, this unique children’s book includes Denver’s original art. Parents and children alike will be moved by this powerful story and will never forget the unexpected and life-changing things that can happen when we help somebody.

“Nobody can help everybody, but everybody can help somebody.

When Cody was little I spoke with him a lot about how to treat people and help people, especially those with disabilities. I’ve also always tried to lead by example: how to treat others, compassion, manners, donating to organizations…. He is a wonderful, kindhearted adult!

I always told my daughter to treat others the way she wanted to be treated and to always respect her elders. We’re Christians so I always tell her to help out the less fortunate when she can. She’s grown and has a baby on the way so I’m hoping what I instilled in her she also teaches her child. Thank you 🙂

After we read 2 stories, we have goodnight kisses and hugs, with my 2 yr old it’s usually atleast 2 or 3 : ) Along with atleast one of her “friends”. Then it’s Good night, I love you, I’ll see you in the morning. Which my 3 yr old loves to repeat back. And now I get a Sweet dreams mommy : ) They are so sweet when they lay down. Each one of them is slightly different in the way they respond. I love it.

We have a fourteen month old and haven’t developed nighttime sayings, but our most precious moments are at dinner time when we are all tiger, or just after bath time when we have a routine- daddy takes our son out of the bath and they snuggle while I get pjs ready, then they hug and we nurse and off to dreamland!

I remember once being in line at a pharmacy with my daughter, when she was around 3 or so. In front of us was a man with only one leg. My daughter, understandably so, got scared and worried and pointed to him. Thankfully, God gave me the right words to use as I calmly asked her how boring this world would be if we were all the same…if we all had 2 legs, 2 arms, the same hair, the same size…etc…since that day she has always had a special concern and love for those that are different from her.

My little boy is only 16 months, so it’s hard to encourage him to help others just yet (although he does share really well!). But I try and remind myself that every moment is precious. Children really do grow up so quickly! Before you know it, he won’t be falling asleep in my arms anymore…. 🙁

When I was a little girl, my grandmother would always say, “Nighty, night. Sleep tight. Don’t let the bed bugs bite. I love you a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck.”

I would answer with, “and a kiss, kiss!” Then, we would hug and kiss goodnight.

It is a tradition I have kept going with my own children.

I have grandchildren now and the precious moments with little ones are back. What a wonderful feeling to have a two year old tell you “I love you Grammy” or a one year old pucker up to give you a kiss just because. I loved raising my children and I have many precious memories of that time but how nice to be able to enjoy it a second time.

When I tuck my almost 3 year old in for nap or bed, we blow kisses to each other from the door. Then I tell her I love her until she says it back {it’s a game}. Then, she will call me Shannon, laugh, and then tell me to be careful, don’t fall, or some other words of wisdom before I go downstairs. It is the sweetest thing.

I try to emphasize how good it feels to help out someone else. My kids are 5 and 2 and it’s still hard for them to “see” anything beyond their own version of something or their own needs. But we are aware and try to encourage caring for others. Our bedtime good night has always been “Goodnight Sweet Pea” because that’s what we’ve called my daughter since she was little. The most precious moments are when my kids actually tell each other they love each other, kiss or hug, and share. That always makes a mama proud.

My dd has seen the bullying commercials on TV and every time, she always comments on how mean they are and how she’s not going to be mean like that. We end up talking about other types of bullying other than the obvious that they show on TV. Our routine at bedtime is saying prayers and then lots of kisses and hugs.

Bedtime rituals are important to my kids. We say our prayers and read books. Even when we aren’t home to tuck our kids in, the babysitter informs us that my kids will say their prayers (to the best of their 4 year old abilities) and “pretend” to read stories to each other. They even tell each other, “I love you stinky butt” which is their silly names for each other.

Let’s talk. Tell me… *How do you encourage your kids to help others? *Do you have any special bedtime sayings between you & your kids? *What are the most precious moments you have in your family?

    Good questions.
    1) How do you encourage your kids to help others? – I wonder if I’m doing this enough. I try to lead by example, or when we someone that needs help, suggesting he help if he can. He is quite young.

    2) We always pray at bed time. And I remind him “no matter what, just remember, mommy, Daddy, and Jesus love you.”

    3) My most precious moment to date is when my newborn little girl was sick and my son (3) said “Jesus, take care of my baby sister.” It was one of the first times he prayed without being encouraged or prompted so it was pretty amazing for me to see that we are managing to nurture faith. And it was encouragement to continue to do so.
