Family finances can be a challenge. There is so much that you need to work on, there is so much that you are responsible for, and it can be a huge pain in the behind to try and work it all out. But, you have to, because that is your job as a parent. We know that it doesn’t feel fair, and we know that it’s not always easy, but that’s the job!
Managing family finances is about more than just paying the bills though, and that’s where people seem to go wrong. In this article, we’re going to be looking a little more into this, and at the things that you’re going to need to do as someone who has to manage everything. If you would like to find out more, feel free to read on.

Budget
The first thing that we’re going to look at is your budget. Your budget is one of the most important parts of financial management, and you can’t afford to just ignore it, even though we’re sure that you would like to. There are too many people who just think that winging their finances is a good way to get through life. No idea what gets paid, when it gets paid, who it gets paid to, and therefore no idea what most of the transactions in the bank are.
The problem with this is that it’s a dangerous game to play. If you do not know how much you’re going to need to pay, to who, and when, how are you going to ensure that there is enough money in your account to pay for it? Some people ‘just know’ that there is enough – but that’s impossible unless you have a lot of disposable income.
So, instead of doing this, you need to make sure that you are creating and adapting your budget as necessary. When your financial situation changes, you need to adapt the budget as needed to reflect this. If you don’t, the entire budget becomes redundant which is the last thing that you need.
Set Aside What You Need For School
You’re also going to need to make sure that you’re setting aside money so that you are able to purchase the things that your kids need for school. The list can be pretty long, so we do recommend that you make a list of all of the things that you need, and then you can tick them off as you get them.
If you have a list, you might find it easier to work out roughly how much this is going to cost, and then you have an easier time setting it to the side rather than just flying blind. Flying blind is fine though if you know that you have a large chunk of money to spend on school supplies.
If you’re someone who struggles with this though, we think it’s a good idea to try and set aside money throughout the year for this so that you’re ready when the school year is about to start. This way, you only have to put a little away at any given time, and you don’t have to worry about trying to scramble when August comes around.
Pay Your Bills On Time
Paying your bills on time is one of the most important things that you’re going to need to do. This impacts your overall credit, so if you miss payments you’re going to be in for a nightmare, and you also need to make sure you’re doing this to keep on top of your finances. You already have enough stress trying to manage everything, we see no reason why you should make it worse by adding late payment of bills on top of that.
If you forget, that’s one thing, just pay it as soon as you remember, but then again having it on your calendar will help you to keep it in mind. Most companies these days insist on a direct payment that they have set up anyway, so it might just come out of your account and you don’t have to worry about it other than to ensure that the money is in there.
Keep Your Health Insurance Going
Health insurance is one of the most important things that you’re going to pay for as a parent, and it’s essential that you don’t have gaps in your coverage to the best of your ability. Is it always going to be possible? No. But, keep an eye on when your plan is ending and make sure that you’re researching a new one asap.
You can look at things like Las Madrinas’ enrollment deadlines guide and the same for other companies so that you know all about this, and look at the terms and tiers of all of the plans that they are offering. Finding the right insurance plan for you and your kids is essential, as you want to make sure that you’re covered for as many issues as possible, and for the highest amount.
Try To Limit Food Waste
Finally, if you want to save money, you should try to limit food waste as much as you can. We bet you that you’re spending a fortune on food that you’re not even eating, which seems like a huge waste. If you were to cost it all, you would be sick at the amount of money you’re wasting through food, and as such you want to limit this as best you can.
Come up with a meal plan and shopping list each week, and stick to what you need. By doing this, you will find it much easier to move forward without wasting a whole load of money.
Hopefully, you have found this article helpful, and now see some of the things that you should be doing to manage your family finances a little better. Is it always going to be straightforward? No, it isn’t. Should you push through and do your best anyway? Yes, you should.
