vacation reading list :: 4 books to read before you see the movie

While my movie watching habits have shifted since I had kids from watching new releases in the theater to waiting for it to be out on disk I still enjoy a good film. I know that I’m not along when I say that when I know that a movie I’m interested in is an adaptation from a book that I try to read the book first.

Vacation Reading List 4 Books to Read Before You See The Movie from The SIMPLE Moms

For those of you who are part of the Book Before The Movie club here are four titles I’m adding to my spring break and summer vacation reading lists before the movies come out this year.

Lean on Pete by Willy Vlautin :: is an award winning novel about a teenage boy’s friendship with a failing race horse as he faces struggles of his own. The story includes a desperate journey across the country as the young boy tries to find a home. The upcoming movie will be of the same name and star Steve Buscemi, Chloë Sevigny, and Charlie Plummer.

Lean on Pete and Red Sparrow covers collage

Red Sparrow by Jason Matthews :: is the first book in the Red Sparrow trilogy and is a spy-game series about Russian intelligence and the CIA. Dominika Egorova is trained as a “Sparrow” seductress and assigned against the man who handles the CIA’s most important Russian mole. The upcoming movie will of the same name and star Jennifer Lawrence and Joel Edgerton.

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle :: has long been established as a wonderful children’s book since winning the Newbery Medal in 1963. The book follows a young girl’s search for her father who was a scientist that disappeared while doing secret government work. The upcoming movie of the same name has a star studded cast including Chris Pine, Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Michael Peña, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Zach Galifianakis, and Storm Reid.

A Wrinkle in Time and Don't Worry He Won't Get Far on Foot covers collage

Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far On Foot by John Callahan :: the book is the uncensored account of Callahan’s life as a recovering alcoholic, quadriplegic, and successful cartoonist. It looks fairly adult in content so proceed with caution. The upcoming movie is of the same name and will star Joaquin Phoenix, Jonah Hill, Rooney Mara, and Jack Black.
