Ever had your kids want to keep a “pet” they found in the yard.  This summer my girls have attempted to adopt toads, bugs, even cicada shells as their new pets. Thanks to the creative mind of author and illustrator Peter Brown, my girls and I have enjoyed seeing what their random animal adoptions could possibly look like from the other side.

Children Make Terrible PetsChildren Make Terrible Pets is a fantastically fun story about a Lucy, a young bear, who adopts a little boy she finds in the woods only have her mother caution her that “children make terrible pets.”

Beyond the random times where 3-year-old Dani has broken out singing “Childrennn…. make terrible pets!” I knew the movie was a hit when she started acting like the little boy, Squeak, by only saying “SQUEAK!” at me over and over. This title story from the DVD is narrated by Emily Eiden.

There are three other stories on the DVD and my girls enjoyed them all, although Elizabeti’s Doll was an instant favorite for my 5-year-old. I think she really enjoyed and related to this story about Elizabeti, a young Tanzanian girl, who adopts a rock to care for herself when her baby brother arrives.

This story is written by Stephanie Stuve-Bodeen, illustrated by Christy Hale, and narrated by Lynn Whitfield and was a perfectly age appropriate for both my kids.
