disclaimer no giveawayI’ve shared my journey with melanoma skin cancer here on the blog over the last 6 years. I kick my 20 year old self when I think about how dumb I was to bake in the sun or at the tanner. My attempts to be a darker shade of white came with a very high cost. Not only did I have melanoma skin cancer in 2013, but I’ve had basal cell skin cancer as well. I see my dermatologist more often then some of my friends. I actually consider her a friend after all these years of check-up’s, waiting for biopsy results, and in office surgeries.

If you aren’t familiar with skin cancer, I’ll give you the quick talk about melanoma. If it’s not caught early it’s very bad. I feel so grateful and blessed to be alive. My melanoma was caught at stage 1a. If I had ignored that funny looking irregular shaped dark freckle on my chest, it’s very possible that I would not be here typing this post today. Basal cell skin cancer isn’t as scary of a beast as melanoma, but it sure can make a mess of your skin. I have two arms despite how the photo below looks. My story isn’t so courageous that I lost an arm to melanoma, although you could.  I should leave the swimsuit modeling to the professionals.

cabana lifeI am SUPER cautious for myself and my family when it comes to the sun. In addition to using sunscreen, we all wear rash guards. Thank goodness they were coming in to style when I was first diagnosed. There’s so many cute options to stay covered up in the sun. I have rash guards from Cabana Life, Lands End, Target, and Old Navy. If I had to pick a favorite brand it would be Cabana Life. Land’s End is a close and more affordable second place fav!

I got my first Cabana Life rash guard and swim skirt a few years ago. The quality is really impressive. I follow Cabana Life on Instagram and swoon over each new season of prints. My mom indulged me for my birthday and got me the royal blue stripe rash guard and matching skirt. A birthday suit! hehe I finally got to wear it (I’m a December birthday) for the first time this week. I’m 5 ft 8.5 inches and the medium in both pieces is the perfect fit.

I first saw my new rash guard on dermatologist, Kathryn Dempsey in her stories and it went on my wish list. I connected with @dermdrdempsey on IG last year and I highly recommend that you follow her account. Her knowledge and passion for skincare and sun safety is inspiring. She teaches me something new on a regular basis. She’s very authentic and somehow finds the time to respond to her followers while running a practice. Also, isn’t she a cute momma?
