My oldest son loves building things. He’d seen some k’nex toys at a friend’s house and had asked about getting some for Christmas. When this Typhoon Frenzy Roller Coaster set came in, his eyes bugged out and wanted to start on it right away. Because he’d never done one before (and because I love building things, too!) I helped him work on it. We started by sorting out all the pieces. With a 2 year old in the house, keeping things sorted was by far the hardest part of the whole thing!
This set has over 640 k’nex parts and pieces as well as everything else you’ll need to make the silver coaster car twist and turn through over 19 feet of track! Assembling the whole thing took several hours and a good bit of work and concentration, but we both enjoyed working together. I will admit that getting the moveable part of the track on properly was tricky and took a few tries until we got it right. And I also learned that you should put the batteries in the motor before you assemble it. Oops.
Overall, we both had fun and hearing his laugh when we finally got it rolling? Worth every second we spent studying the instruction manual! All of my children sat and watched it go and go and go until I finally had to turn it off.
I took this picture to show you just how big this thing is! This is not a small project – it’s roughly 16 x 14 x 3.5 – and you’ll need space to devote to it while it’s up. But it’s one of those toys you can’t resist playing with when you see it.
Another bonus? You can download exclusive instructions to build an incredible second model, the Tsunami Surge Coaster! Two-for-one. Love it!
This is a fun but challenging gift for boys and girls ages 9 and up who love to build things. We’ve taken it apart for now and I’m actually looking forward to putting it back together again.
