Who doesn’t associate fairy tales with kids? Unfortunately, a lot of fairy tales are pretty darn scary for a kid. A little girl being chased by a big bad wolf or a giant saying how he is going to make bread from someone’s bones isn’t exactly the story you want to be reading your preschooler before bedtime.
My1Story provides a positive twist on the traditional fairy tale before wrapping it up with a happy ending. I love Cake and Jack and the Magic Beans are the first two books available from the My1Story series.
The loveable, never scary, illustrations are by Jaime Rodriguez, a former Walt Disney Company character artist. Formerly sinister big bad wolf has been rewritten as a mischievous but approachable wolf cub. The giant in Jack & the Beanstalk transforms into Beanie, still a giant but a young, small one.
My girls instantly took to the happy looking Jack and the Magic Beans book. They loved the bright colors and adorable characters, while I loved that they were getting a lesson in not taking things that don’t belong to them.
As great as the books are, what really made My1Story a hit with my kids was Beanie. The plush version of the Beanie character from the Jack and the Magic Beans book (see above photo).Plush Beanie matches his 2-dimensional character right down the the 5 bright red-orange colored hairs on his head. Only this Beanie is soft, cuddly and easy to love (as evidenced by 2-year-old Dani’s immediate adoption of him as her new “I can’t sleep without you” bedtime friend).
